What is pediatric
ophthalmology

Paediatric ophthalmology is a specialised branch of ophthalmology focused on the eye health of infants, children, and young adults. A child’s visual system is constantly developing, and several conditions, if caught early, are significantly more treatable than if addressed later. This includes conditions like squint, lazy eye, refractive errors, and other developmental eye conditions.

The earlier any of these are identified and treated, the better the long-term outcome for your child’s vision.

Treatment

Examinations begin with a complete eye check-up, conducted personally by Dr. Parekh. Over nearly four decades, he has treated a significant number of paediatric patients and understands that for a child, a medical consultation can feel overwhelming or unfamiliar. He adapts the flow of each consultation accordingly, creating a comfortable, safe environment for the child, while in the process, gathering everything required to arrive at a clear diagnosis.

Who can be treated

Patients of every age can be treated, from infants as young as 6 months through children, adults, and senior citizens.

At what age should I bring my child in for their first eye check-up?
We recommend at least one complete eye check-up before the age of 3, though we have previously also had patients as young as 6 months old. If you notice anything concerning before that, don’t wait; an earlier consultation is always better.
When is the right time to bring my child in for a consultation?
If you observe your child struggling with their vision in any way, whether they’re squinting, tilting their head to see better, or complaining of headaches, a consultation is recommended as soon as possible. Beyond specific symptoms, it is also good practice to have your child’s eyes checked periodically as they grow, even if nothing seems wrong.
How long does a paediatric consultation take?
A first visit typically takes between 45-60 minutes, depending on how responsive and cooperative the child is. In some cases, dilating eye drops may be required to allow a more thorough examination of the retina. If this is needed, please account for some additional time before your child’s vision fully settles.
My child is nervous about visiting the doctor - what do I do?
We completely understand that the entire experience can feel overwhelming for the child, and often for the parents who walk in feeling equally nervous. Our priority at the clinic is to ensure that every consultation is paced in a way that helps the child feel comfortable and at ease. Parents are welcome to be present throughout.
