What is double vision

Double vision, clinically known as diplopia, is when you see two images of a single object at the same time and can occur for several reasons, ranging from eye muscle imbalance and alignment issues to neurological conditions or thyroid-related eye disease.

Because the right course of treatment depends entirely on what’s causing it, identifying the underlying cause is always the starting point.

Treatment

The consultation begins with a detailed assessment to identify the underlying cause of the double vision. Based on the diagnosis, treatment may include corrective glasses, prism lenses, or targeted exercises – or in some cases, treating the root cause directly. We will walk you through the findings and recommend the right course of action.

When should I see a doctor for double vision?

If you are experiencing double vision, even if it’s not constant, it is always safer to get it medically examined, as it can be caused by several factors. This is particularly relevant if you have previously been treated for squint, have a thyroid-related eye condition, or are experiencing any other symptoms alongside the double vision.

Is sudden-onset double vision a medical emergency?
Sudden-onset double vision, particularly if accompanied by a headache, dizziness, or any other unusual symptoms, should be checked as soon as possible. Most other cases can be planned, but an early consultation is always recommended.
Will I need surgery for double vision?
Not necessarily. Most cases can be managed with prism glasses, exercises, or by treating the underlying cause. Surgery is considered only in selected cases where other options haven’t resolved the condition.
Why do I sometimes see double but not always?
Intermittent double vision is fairly common and can be caused by eye muscle fatigue, a previously controlled squint that has started to reappear, or other underlying factors. Getting it formally checked is the only way to know for sure what’s causing it.
How long does a double vision consultation take?
A first consultation typically takes between 45-60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case and what’s needed to arrive at a clear diagnosis.
