What is retina
examination

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye responsible for processing what we see. In patients with conditions like diabetes, hypertension, raised cholesterol, or thyroid disease, it’s typically one of the first areas of the body to show signs of damage, often before any symptoms are felt.

A dilated examination allows us to assess retinal health in detail and catch any changes early, before they result in permanent vision loss.

Treatment

The examination begins with dilating eye drops to allow a detailed view of the retina and surrounding areas. Dr. Parekh personally conducts the examination and will walk you through the diagnosis at the end of the visit, along with any next steps as needed.

Who should get a retinal examination?

We particularly recommend this for anyone diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, raised cholesterol, thyroid disease, or glaucoma, as well as those with a family history of retinal disease. It is also advisable for anyone experiencing sudden changes in vision, new floaters, or flashes of light – all of which should be evaluated promptly.

Why do I need dilating eye drops for a retinal examination?
Dilating eye drops widen the pupil, allowing us to get a clear and complete view of the retina. Without dilation, only a small portion of the retina is visible, which is not sufficient for a thorough examination.
How long does a retinal examination take?
A retinal examination typically takes between 45-60 minutes. Please account for some additional time after the examination, as the effects of the dilating drops may leave your vision slightly blurred for a few hours.
How often should I get a retinal examination?
We recommend at least twice a year for anyone with diabetes, hypertension, or other conditions that affect the retina, or more frequently depending on the severity of the condition.
Is a retinal examination painful or uncomfortable?
No. The examination itself is entirely non-invasive. The dilating eye drops may cause mild sensitivity to light for a few hours after, but the examination involves no pain or discomfort.
